Wizard of OZ with Orchestra

Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra • Schuster Center

Ever wonder why Dorothy, her three faithful companions, the Wicked Witch and the Wizard seem as fresh, real and endearing as the day this magical film hit the theaters in 1939? Mark it down to the combination of brilliant casting, the advent of color movies, a wonderful script adaptation of a beloved children’s story, a landmark performance from a singer who would go on to make musical history, and, above all, the music and lyrics of Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg. It was the perfect union of these factors and many others that produced a motion picture that has defined the concept of “timeless.” Don’t miss this wonderful blend of Hollywood’s best with the live sound of a full orchestra.

Music of Queen – A Rock & Symphonic Spectacular

With over four decades of music and 18 number one albums to their credit, Queen is recognized as one of the most influential British rock bands of all time. The year 2008 saw the creation of a new show: MUSIC OF QUEEN – A ROCK & SYMPHONIC SPECTACULAR. It features a full rock band and stars from the London West End smash hit musical “We Will Rock You”. With over seventy performers on stage this is one of the biggest rock shows on earth, featuring: “A Kind of Magic,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Radio Ga Ga,” “We Are The Champions,” “Somebody To Love,” “Who Wants To Live Forever,” “Killer Queen,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Fat Bottomed Girls,” “I Want It All,” and many more. In fact, you’ll hear all of Queen’s classic hits.

Sons of Russia

Three magnificent Russian works make up a varied April classical program. Jessica Hung, DPO Concertmaster, takes the solo spotlight for the Prokofiev Concerto. Rimsky-Korsakov’s celebratory overture opens the evening and the intense Pathétique closes.

Caroline or Change

The Human Race Theatre Company • The Loft Theatre

It’s America in 1963, with the turmoil of the JFK assassination and the civil rights movement. In a Jewish household in Louisiana, the divorced African-American maid and the eight-year old family son have their own worries and relationship. Virtually sung-through, in styles ranging from Motown to Yiddish Klezmer, CAROLINE OR CHANGE brings together the incredible talents of Kushner (Angels in America) and Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie) to create a multi-Tony-nominated show that is about both major issues of the nation and personal issues of the household, and how they interact.

Gem of the Ocean

The Human Race Theatre Company • The Loft Theatre

Each of the ten plays in the late August Wilson’s famed “Pittsburgh Cycle” covers a different decade of the 1900s in an urban African-American neighborhood, and Gem, while the next-to-last written, is the first chronologically. It’s set in 1904, an age when slavery no longer exists but oppression remains all too real, and where the problems of the residents seem overwhelming. At the core of the story is Aunt Ester, whose 285 years of life include a journey to America on a slave ship, and who uses her experiences to bring moral guidance to new generations.

The Haunted Series:  Jekyll and Hyde/Sleepy Hollow

Dayton Ballet’s new Artistic Director, Karen Russo Burke begins the season with a haunting world premiere of SLEEPY HOLLOW. In addition, HYDING INSIDE returns with its critically acclaimed depiction of man’s inner struggle between good and evil. Loosely based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, HYDING INSIDE explores the depths of the human psyche in this thrilling and mystifying story.

The Nutcracker

Dayton Ballet • Schuster Center

Infused with a splash of Dayton history, Dayton Ballet’s annual production of THE NUTCRACKER has become a cherished holiday tradition for countless families and friends in the Miami Valley. Over 100 local children participate alongside the Dayton Ballet Company, sharing the beloved story of a young Virginia “Jinny” Weiffenbach (Kettering), a magical nutcracker, scurrying little mice and the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Hairspray

Don’t miss HAIRSPRAY, Broadway’s musical-comedy phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture and won eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The Phantom of the Opera

Far beneath the majesty and splendor of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.  Wright State’s production will mark the regional premiere of the show that continues to captivate audiences all over the world after more than 10,000 performances. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerizing score along with jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects, magically combine to bring this tragic love story to life.

Familiar Crossings

Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC) • Centennial Hall at Stivers School for the Arts

Nationally acclaimed and Dayton–based visual artist Bing Davis will collaborate with world-renowned DCDC for this special concert event.  Long before “collaborations” became a buzzword among performing arts organizations, Mr. Davis partnered with DCDC when company founder Jeraldyne Blunden was at the helm. Continuing an innovative tradition, Mr. Davis and DCDC will come together again to create an exciting amalgam of dance and visual art.

Genticorum

Cityfolk • Centennial Hall at Stivers School for the Arts

The fast-rising Canadian band Genticorum is a Québécois acoustic power trio with a distinctive sound that is at once both ancient and modern—what Sing Out calls “a very full and glorious noise, both instrumentally and vocally.” The charismatic young group (Pascal Gemme, Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand, Yann Falquet) has captivated audiences in 15 countries with its fresh take on traditional European and North American folk music that combines precise and intricate fiddle and flute work, songs sung in French, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion and the characteristic and irrepressible joie de vivre that’s at the heart of Québécois music.
