The In-School program is structured to include four to six performances during the academic year. The performances are engaging and the artists address core curriculum areas like English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Purchasing a package of In-School Performances makes your school a Muse Machine Member School, and member schools are eligible for many perks such as free events for teachers and discounted ticket pricing for area productions for students.

Muse Machine 2011-12 - Sogbety DiomandeSogbety Diomande

Kickoff artist

Native of the Ivory Coast in Wes t Africa, SOGBETY DIOMANDE has been performing since he was a child. He has been a member of Ballet National de Cote d’ Ivoire, Kotchegna Dance Company, and has been featured with many troupes in NYC and around the US. Sogbety started his own troupe in 2005. His troupe performs at festivals and in colleges throughout the U.S. Sogbety’s performances are thrilling and interactive and a great way to begin your Muse year. Invite the whole school – this artist is perfect for large audiences.

Eric Paton is a musician, performer, and educator specializing in percussion from around the world. From the dynamic style of taiko drumming of Japan to the infectious rhythms of samba from Brazil, Paton infuses excitement and interaction into hi s teaching. Paton’s style is highly participatory and he actively engages student s and teacher s as they explore the language, history and culture of music from around the world. This multicultural assembly is a thrilling way to launch your Muse year and ensure a strong Muse Member ship presence for the New Year. Sometimes societal change happens slowly. Other times a single, monumental episode (either tragic or heroic) can cause a huge change in the way we, as Americans, see ourselves and our world. This three-character play will explore the ways our lives as Americans were forever altered by three iconic moments in time: the assassination of John F. Kennedy; the event s of 9/11; and the elect ion of the first African- American president, Barack Obama. Before Rent there was La bohème…Before West Side Story there was Romeo and Juliet…and before Bugs Bunny became the “Rabbit of Seville” there was the original Barber of Seville! Figaro, Figaro, Feeeeegaaaahhhroh! OMG, those were all operas? Students will love this fast -paced blend of something old and something new as they learn that some of their favorite musicals, cartoons and even pop songs have their roots in the opera tradition. Love, revenge and gorgeous music – opera has it al l – which is why contemporary artists borrow freely from operas today. Written and directed by Muse Machine Executive Director Luke Dennis and presented by Dayton Opera, OMG! It’s Opera features the incredible talent s of four young singers from Dayton Opera’s acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program per forming excerpt s from opera and Broadway to cartoons and pop. OMG – you’ll love it!! !


Muse Machine 2011-12 - Dancing WheelsDancing Wheels: Art and Science in Motion

Dancing Wheels Company

Dancing Wheels is an exciting dance company that utilizes able-bodied and disabled dancers. Art and Science in Motion is an interactive program with dance, disability awareness and curriculum-based subject matter centered on Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. The program demonstrates such factors as force, acceleration and opposing react ions through the use of the Dancing Wheels Company’s highly technical wheelchairs used for everyday mobility and dance. The program also touches on the science behind wheelchair construction, development and the technologies that go into the composition of the chair’s metals, wheel circumference and design elements. This thrilling performance will help students recognize their abilities while learning to respect the abilities of others as well as imparting a message that individual dreams and personal goals can be achieved through perseverance, hard work and belief in oneself.

Take a dark and mysterious journey into the life of Edgar Allan Poe. This imaginative musical uses Poe’s poetry and short stories as its base and his shifting obsessions with the women in his life as its catalyst. With hauntingly beautiful melodies, Nevermore breathes new life into Poe’s work and explores a twisted true-life tale that is as bizarre as his classic stories of the macabre. Directed by Muse Machine’s Director for Secondary Education David Brush, join us as we develop this thrilling new musical in an edition designed exclusively for Muse audiences. Nevermore is presented through a special arrangement from Theatrical Rights Worldwide and creators Grace Barnes and Matt Conner.

Film

A dynamic, interactive presentation, The Magic of Movies illustrates how diverse art forms come together to create the illusion of motion pictures. The multi-media experience is hosted by David Sherman, the Muse alum and film graduate who created recent promotional videos for Muse and the onstage movies seen in Muse Machine’s Singin’ in the Rain. Using a large screen, projections of films from early silent experiments through current blockbusters and plenty of student participation, The Magic of Movies will convey concepts including cinematography, special effects, music, editing and how all of these shape the way we experience one of the most popular art forms of all: the movies.


Muse Machine 2011-12 - Amber HarrisAmber Harris

Amber Harris is a unique storyteller and powerful singer. She portrays famous African-American women of history with originality and personality. In her performances, Amber will walk in the shoes of some of the greatest legends of all time. You may choose for her to portray Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks or Coretta Scott King, or she will tell the story of Sojourner Truth. At the end of each performance, Amber will leave time for Q and A. Please indicate which character you would like her to portray.

In the style of Glee and NBC’s The Sing-Off, InChant is a vocals-only mixed ensemble from The Ohio State University featuring intricate harmonies, vocal percussion and a repertoire of classic and contemporary hits. These current OSU students will energize and thrill your students with their contemporary sound as well as inspire your students to pursue collegiate level performance opportunities. PLUS – get chance to ask them questions on how to kick-start your OWN a capella group right in your own school!
